Obituary for Modesta Montoya

Modesta Montoya
Modesta Montoya, 86, went to her final rest on Wednesday, March 14, 2018at her home in La Salle, CO. She was born in Las Manuelitas, New Mexico, on March 9, 1932, to Benito and Lazarita Padilla. Modesta, age 5, along with her sister, Elvira, began the labor of shepherding on their family property in Northern New Mexico. Later, she and her five sisters helped their dad in his lumber and ranching business on their forest land.
In October, 1955, she married Manuel de Montoya, in Sapello, New Mexico. They moved to the southeast La Salle area early the following year. She worked as a seamstress at Baileys and Kelly’s before she began to do full time child care for her granddaughters. Later, she enjoyed caring for great-grandchildren.
She is known for making quilts for her family and friends. Her sewing machine was always working as she created over two hundred quilts a year giving many away to anyone in need. Other hobbies included gardening, crocheting, painting. Her creativity showed in her beautifully landscaped yard.

She will be remembered by her children: Manuel (Vivian Pena), Vicki Starr, and Gloria (Robert) Bondo; her granddaughters: Sheree Montoya, Amanda Starr, DeeAnna Starr, Christy Montoya, Jessica Montoya, and ten great-grandchildren.
Also, surviving her are her sisters Elvira Roybal of Denver, Lorenza (Susano) Ortiz, and Maria Luisa Padilla of Sapello, N.M., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, especially her niece Lilly Silva Jauregui who provided much love and care the last six weeks.

Modesta was preceded in death by her parents, husband Manuel, and sisters Connie Silva and Margaret Quintana.

A special thanks goes to Barb and Mary from Suncrest Hospice for their care and advice.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018 at The Adventure Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4100 20th Street, Greeley with a luncheon afterwards.

Memorial contributions may be made to “The Adventure SDA Charity Fund” in care of Adamson Funeral & Cremation, 2000 47th Ave, Greeley, CO 80634.
