Alfred Hurkes
Alfred “Al or Shorty” Hurkes, 92, of Evans, CO passed away on January 5, 2017 in Evans, CO.
Al was born in Watertown, SD to Tony and Olivia (Sturm) Hurkes. He grew up in the Kranzburg and Watertown area and attended Catholic school in Kranzburg, SD. On May 28, 1956 in Waverly, SD, Al married Helen Stein. Al served in the Army from 1950-1952 and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Al was a farmer while in South Dakota, and after moving to Colorado he was a miner at the Climax Molybdenum Mine in Leadville, CO, retiring in 1982.
He enjoyed tractors, ice fishing, bird watching, cooking, and smoking fish. Al loved gardening and was well known for his gardens. He was a hard worker and loved to stay in contact with his Army buddies. In his later years, Al’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Al attended Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville, CO and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greeley.
Al is survived by his wife, Helen of Evans; children, David of Arizona, Deb List of Colorado Springs, CO, Diane (James) Eussen of Greeley, Dorene (JJ) East of Johnstown, CO, and Dustin (Mandi) of Leadville; grandchildren, Michael, Craig, Christopher, Brittany, Sarah, Andrew, Sami, and Makenna; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Luella Holton and Ethel Garmoe; and brother, Larry Cole (Diana).
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dana; two brothers; and one sister.
Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. on June 3, 2017 at Adamson Chapel. Inurnment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery on June 5th.
