Obituary for Coral J. Nystuen

Coral J. Nystuen passed away surrounded by family in Fort Collins, Colorado on March 28th.
Born in Valley City, North Dakota on June 21, 1929 to Curtis Haga and Ella Toring Haga, she attended grade school and high school in Enderlin, North Dakota. She then went on to attend North Dakota State University in Fargo and earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Home Economics.
On July 20, 1952 she married Walter Nystuen in Enderlin, North Dakota. They lived in Jacksonville, Florida while Walter served in the U. S. Navy, where their son, Robert, was born. They moved to Fargo, North Dakota where Walter was Assistant Cass County Extension Agent. They later moved to Rugby, North Dakota where Walter served as the Pierce County Extension Agent. Their daughter, Joan, was born there.
In 1959, Coral was crowned Mrs. North Dakota, and later competed in the Mrs. America Pagent in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She won third in the nation for Cake Baking, with her Sour cream Chocolate Cake recipe.
In 1966 they moved to Carrington, North Dakota. Walter went to work there for Bremer Bank and Coral was a homemaker.
Coral was the consummate homemaker. In addition to her cooking and baking skills, she was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and counted cross stitcher. She was very active in the Trinity Lutheran Church and also Ladies’ Bridge Clubs.
Upon Walter’s retirement from banking, they enjoyed traveling to Norway, and also to Colorado and Montana to visit their children and grandchildren. They also became “Snowbirds” and spent winters in Mesa, Arizona for several years.
In later years when widowed, Coral moved to Greeley, Colorado to be near her daughter, and her granddaughters and their families, including four great grandsons.
She enjoyed retirement living there and being involved with various activities. She also traveled to Montana to spend time with her son and his family, where she had three grandsons, and two great granddaughters.
Coral was preceded in death by her mother Ella and father Curtis Haga, husband, Walter, brother Allen “Buster” Haga and sister Judy Eidem.
She is survived by son, Robert (Kim) of Lakeside, Montana; daughter Joan(Phill Leffler) of Eaton, Colorado; grandsons Andy (Betsy) of Chicago, Illinois; Steven (Kristen) of Missoula, Montana; Carl (Hilary) of Bozeman, Montana; granddaughters Angela (Chad) and Susan (Jim) both of Fort Collins, Colorado; and great grandchildren Walton, Emmett, William, Matthew, Olivia and Natalie.
Cremation has occurred. Committal of Coral’s ashes will be at a later date this spring in Carrington, North Dakota in the family plot with husband Walter.
