Obituary for Mark E Gurney

Mark Gurney, 56, of Greeley, passed away on January 9, 2019 in Greeley, Colorado. He was born to Norman and Cecelia (Trujillo) Gurney on August 12, 1962 in Lawrence, Kansas. In 1972 his family moved to the Greeley and LaSalle area where they began operating the Handy Spot Store in 1974 and opened the Gurney Mexican-American Karie-Out restaurant in 1985. Mark attended Valley High School and Aims Community College. He married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Leggett, in 1981 at First Presbyterian Church in LaSalle.
Mark worked at the Monfort Packing Plant in Greeley for 17 years and then moved to ConAgra/Swift headquarters as he transitioned his career into Information Technology. He spent the next 20 years in IT, most recently with Salud Family Clinics.
Mark loved his family and spending time with them as much as he could. He enjoyed food culture, cooking, and taking vacations to enjoy the local cuisine. He enjoyed long drives (“shootin’ a cruise”) and listening to a wide variety of music, especially from the 70’s and 80’s. Mark was a very sociable person and never met a stranger he didn’t get to know.
Mark is survived by his wife, Cheryl; children, Mark and wife Lindsay Gurney of Greeley; Melissa and husband Matt Schultz of Fort Collins; Amanda and husband Aaron Gardner of Greeley; four grandchildren, with one on the way. His brothers, James Gurney of Atlanta, Georgia; Matt and wife Keyleigh Gurney; Tim and wife Christine Gurney all of Greeley; sisters, Rachel and husband Patrick Speer of Evans; Kara and husband Joey Solano of Fairview, Tennessee; and lots of nieces and nephews.
Mark was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Norman and Cecelia, and brother, John Gurney.
